Dear athletes, respected sports officials, dear guests, ladies and gentlemen,
On behalf of all citizens I warmly greet you and express warm welcome in Varazdin, one of the host cities of the World Handball Championship.
Being part of such significant world events is a great avowal but also the honor to the citizens or institutions that will participate in the organization of this event. Varazdin has already been the organizer of big sports events like the European Junior Championship in athletics, one part of the Univerzijada, the World Championships in fishing or the World Firemen’s Games. On each of these events, the city proved as an excellent organizer and host, and it will once again, I am convinced, in even better edition approve to our guests, supporters and national teams that will play in the Group "C" of the 21st World Handball Championship.
Varazdin - a city of rich sporting tradition was the cradle of Croatian handball, because in 1930, right here was played the first handball match in the wider region, which includes territory of the former state. During the past decade sporting life of the city strongly developed, and today, Varazdin is a milleu with a very large number of registered athletes and teams in different sports branches. This development followed the construction of numerous sports facilities, so today we are very proud with soccer and athletics stadiums, swimming pool and sports halls specialized for certain minor sports. Many successful first-leagues clubs follows our primary commitment to support amateur sport as well as the work of sports schools for children and youths.
Construction of new sport arena along the river Drava, and its opening under the lights of world’s publicity, open a new chapter in further successful development of sport and the city in general.
Varazdin, as powerful regional center of northwestern Croatia, in which interwove rich cultural traditions, economic progress and contemporary urban trends, is ready to offer a multitude catering, travel, entertainment and other contents, thanks to whom will our sincere hospitality and openness to new friends stay in the best memories. Atmosphere of a small town with its famous baroque architecture will become completely safe place for convergence of diversities and the creation of new sports friends.
We want good sporting results to all participants of the competition, in the spirit of fair-play and sports collectiveness.
